Alresford Show

Saturday 4 September 2021 – Cancelled

Very sadly the difficult decision has been taken to cancel this year’s Alresford Agricultural Show.  The Alresford and District Agricultural Society is a Registered Charity and manned almost exclusively by volunteers; and it costs on average £220,000 to hold our annual show.  Over the last few months we have endeavoured to put together a stripped back show which would meet anticipated local authority Covid guidelines in September. However, it is not possible to secure Covid event Insurance and whilst the Govt remains positive about opening up the UK there is still significant uncertainty surrounding what our possible show parameters might be. On average we attract a gate of circa 15,000 and these gate numbers are needed to meet the high production cost and any gate cap, for example, around 5,000 – 7,500  destabilises the financial model and introduces significant risk.

In putting together a stripped back show the necessary Health and Safety costs remain while the increased costs of ensuring Covid compliance is an added burden. Unfortunately, when this is set against the backdrop of almost every other local agricultural show cancellation there are also increased concerns with trade stands viability. Therefore the decision has been made to take a longer term view in order to protect our secure financial position so that when things do open up again we will be in a position to return.

The Trustees and I are extremely grateful for the continued positive local support and we hope to return next year as normal.

Trophy Steward

Alresford Show is looking to recruit a new Trophy Steward to take responsibility for managing the Show’s trophies and rosettes (livestock, horse and other). This is a part-time role which offers a small renumeration.

The post involves ensuring the various trophies are returned from the previous winners and they are available to be awarded on Show day, ordering rosettes for all classes (livestock, horse and other). The Trophy Steward liaises with members of the public and trade suppliers (principally by phone and email), as well as being responsible for the security of trophies on Show Day.

The Alresford Show is, quite simply, a celebration of rural life and the communities which live it. From 1908 when an enthusiastic group of local people staged the first Alresford Show to promote farming, the event has always showcased the best of local agriculture. Over 100 years later, it’s still run with the same passion and offers visitors of all ages a full-on, first-hand, experience of the countryside and all that it stands for.

Meet farm animals from Shire horses to chickens, from prize cattle to sheep. Watch ferret racing, admire the birds of prey and buy country crafts; slow down and breathe deeply. Pick yourself a gourmet lunch of local artisan food and drink, stretch out and picnic against the stunning backdrop of Alresford and Tichborne while the children explore. Whether you earn a living from it or enjoy walking your dog in it, give your family a day out which will reconnect you to the countryside.

Join us for beautiful animals, gorgeous local food and drink, plenty of shopping, children’s FREE entertainment plus much more. We have plenty of FREE parking at the showground.

Be part of this iconic event, compete, trade or visit, we’d love to see you at the 2021 Alresford Show.
