Activities especially for children
Farming Fun Playground
All the fun of the farm for the youngsters to enjoy whist Mum and Dad supervise play from outside the playpen. Bales of straw to clamber on, pedal tractors to use, slides and a sandpit add up to a great way to let off steam for a few minutes.
Mill Cottage Farm Animal Petting
We’re bringing along guinea pigs, rabbits, dogs, ducklings, chicks, sheep, goats, donkeys, ducks, chickens and a turkey! Come and enjoy the menagerie of animals and learn a little bit about us.
Come along to Jake’s big Star Tent and enjoy the circus atmosphere. See Jake juggling balls, spinning plates and weather permitting using his 14ft tight wire. You could even join in some of his workshops, an activity not to be missed!
Hampshire & IOW Air Ambulance
Come and see us on stand B71!
Calling all budding chefs – come and discover the fun of cooking your own food in our kids kitchen. A fun introduction to the world of cookery: next stop the Great British Bake Off! And, best of all, you get to keep and eat what you make! Thanks to Alresford Salads for sponsoring this fun activity.
Punch and Judy
Always a favourite with young and not so young alike, don’t miss the exploits of bad Mr Punch as he tries to have his wicked way over the powers for good. Will he win or will he be foiled once again? Once again we are grateful to Geoffrey Gould for creating his magic with several different shows throughout the day.
Activities for all of the family
Alresford Ukulele Jam
The Alresford Ukulele Jam is Alresford’s own grown all male Ukulele group with girls in it…and occasionally instruments which are not Ukulele’s…Like any good jam it is a true mix up of musical genre’s ranging from traditional to modern, our songs take in everything from folk, modern pop, blues, country, dance, punk and jazz to rock – all are given the ukulele treatment with unique mash-ups, sing-a-longs and the ukulele “uke” box also forming part of the fun, lively set. If you like to see a small instrument truly thrashed this is the place for you!
Beagles, Hounds & Bloodhounds
The Hampshire Hunt Hounds at 12.45pm in the Main Ring. The Southdowns Bloodhounds at 15.00pm in Ring One. The Meon Valley Beagles at 14.25pm in the Main Ring.
Birds of Prey, Owls & Falcons
The Haven Falconry Display team will once again be showing their superb collection of Eagles, Falcons, Hawks and Owls during the day. The highlight of their visit to the show is the flying display in the Avenue Ring at 2.30pm – definitely something not to be missed!
Bees and Beekeeping
Come along to the bee tent and, courtesy of Meon Valley Beekeepers, learn how bees make honey, and the vital role they play in nature, assisting the reproduction of our plants and shrubs. Featuring a real bee hive, you can see close up bees turn the pollen they have collected into honey. And, of course, there will be many honey products for you to buy.
Companion Dog Show
There is always something for everyone in the Companion Dog Show, whether you are drawn to the high quality pedigree classes or bowled over by the dog the judges would most like to take home. And who will win the dog that looks most like its handler? Everyone can enter, with classes for family pets as well as potential Crufts champions. Entries are from 11.00am with judging from 12.30pm.
Ferrets & Ferret Racing
Ferret racing is great entertainment and between races you can get up close and personal with the animals – you can even stroke and handle them, to prove that they really don’t bite! Thanks to the Hants and Berks Ferret Club for making this possible.
Glass Blowing Demonstration
We are pleased to welcome back Merlyn Farwell, with his mobile glass blowing studio to give live demonstrations of his fascinating art. Merlyn is one of life’s one-offs – he describes himself as an eccentric inventor, and you can be sure that his commentaries will draw on his rich experience of life, as he produces blown glass objet’s d’art from his mobile furnace.
Horse Show Rings 1 – 3
The standard of competition is excellent in a wide variety of classes from junior jumping to retrained racehorses, with mountain, moorland and pleasure driving classes to name but a few.
The Alresford and District Horticultural Society’s annual Show is always a major attraction with breath-taking displays of cut flowers and floral decorations, and magnificent vegetable and fruit exhibits from local amateur gardeners, all vying to be best in class. But the horticulture tent is about more than just flowers, plants and vegetables – there are also cookery, craft, needlework and photography competitions and exhibitions too – truly something for everyone and not to be missed.
No Agricultural Show would be complete without its Livestock Show. Come and see some of the best cattle , sheep, pigs and goats in the region, all groomed to be at their absolute best to impress the judges. Here you will find some of the less well-known breeds and have the chance to enjoy the characters in the goat and pig exhibitions, as well as being able to touch the sheep to feel the differences in their coats. The culmination of the Livestock Show is the Grand Parade of champions in the Main Ring at 15.15pm. Please note – the livestock area will be closed to the public at 3.00pm to allow preparations for the Grand Parade.
Poultry Exhibition and Egg Show
The chicken and egg. Ever wondered which came first? Visit the poultry tent and all might be revealed! The Hants and Berks Poultry Fanciers will again be showing a wide range of poultry and ducks – some well-known and others less so. To complement the birds, John Breslain will be displaying a bewildering variety of eggs – in all colours, patterns, shapes and sizes.
The Sheep Show
Don’t miss the fleecy fun of The Sheep Show, an educational and humorous live stage event starring a cast of ewes and rams and their two-legged MC.
It’s a great way of learning about how the many breeds of sheep in the UK today have been bred over the centuries to produce the wool and meat that we rely. One woolly performer will be selected for a Sheep Shearing demonstration which shows the impressive skills needed to safely divest the sheep of its winter coat and produce a fleece that is ready to go to market.
To round off the Show, the sheep will prove that they are not as simple-minded as you may think by dancing to their favourite tunes. The Sheep Show is hugely popular so turn up early to make sure you get a seat!
Six rare breed pigs, ranging from Tamworths to Gloucester Old Spots to Saddlebacks to Berkshires to Oxford Sandy and Blacks, fill the arena with their amusing antics. The handlers, who wear country style outfits, encourage them down the track by shaking a bucket of food and the pigs hurl themselves over the hurdles in their rush to be the first to the bucket! Come along and cheer on your favourite!
Main Ring is elegance personified, with classes for horses and ponies harnessed singly, in pairs and in tandem to a variety of carriages. A great spectacle, and an escape from the bustle of the main Show for a while.
Over 50 local exhibitors will be displaying their hand-made items, ranging from ceramics and jewellery to watercolour painting, and wood carving, and competing for the Best Exhibit trophy. There is sure to be something for everyone in the craft tent and all exhibitors will be offering items for sale – perhaps a keepsake to remind you of your visit to the Show?
Try your hand at climbing one of the biggest and tallest trees on the Showground. Arbour Venture Training offers a safe environment for you to get a birds-eye view of the Showground, whether you are aged 8 or 80! Go on, have a go!
with this impressive display of vintage farm machinery. Enjoy wandering past yesteryear’s tractors, steam engines and other exhibits to see how the ancestors of today’s farmers tended the land and their livestock. And don’t miss the grand procession in the Main Ring.
Another perennial favourite, our local Women’s Institutes will be staging a number of displays and offering activities for the children. The WI Country Markets will be selling local home-made produce – cakes, preserves, crafts and plants. And of course it just wouldn’t be the WI if there were not cups of tea and cakes on sale!
There are food, three public bars and ice cream outlets at various points around the showground. In addition a range of local produce is on sale in the Produce Tent and the WI offer tea, coffee and cakes.
